What is Education?

Samuel Johnson: "The Supreme end of education is expert discernment in all things, the power to tell the good from the bad, the genuine from the counterfeit; and to prefer the good and the genuine to the bad and the counterfeit."

Last year I attended the West Virginia Homeschool Conference. A one day affair in Charleston, West Virginia. (Very close to home). Jeff Myers was the keynote speaker. He gave several talks which were really good. Some of you may remember him from Of Knights and Fair Maidens. He talked about Biblical discernment and developing discerning hearts. Isn't this what we want? Observe our culture.............What do they want you to do and why? To what motives do they appeal? Can they really deliver what they promise? What is best? He gave me lots to think about and today I am reminded. He talked about developing discerning minds that question........What do you mean by that? How do you know that is true? Where do you get your information? What happens if you are wrong?

I want my children to know:
God
God loves them
they are valuable because they are made in God's image
they are loved by their parents
a lifetime love for learning.

Discernment leads the way!
