A Train Ride to Portland, Oregon

Lawrence has been on vacation for the last week. We have had a lot of fun.

Early Monday morning Lawrence and I boarded Amtrak to Portland, Oregon from Tacoma, Washington. This is the first time we remember taking a train in the United States. It was such a nice ride. We enjoyed it immensely! It was roomy and the scenery was beautiful. Much of the train ride was along the waterfront. We had a nice quiet time to visit.

When we arrived in Portland we were on foot. It took a little while to get our directions in place and to learn to use the public transit. We visited the public library and even visited the Beverly Cleary Children's Library. Next we went to our motel and dropped off our bags. By this time we were ready to eat. We road trains, street cars, and the bus several times. We spent much of our time in Powell Bookstore. I had wanted to visit this place for years! Powell Bookstore has 6 stores. There are 5 others besides the one pictured which covers a city block.
We did a lot of walking too. We saw some interesting architecture, art work, and people as we went about Portland. On Tuesday we took it easy and got up when we wanted to. We walked to a restaurant well known in the area for hotcakes. It has been in the same location for 53 years. We took the public transit back to Pioneer Park and on to Powell bookstore. We finally settled on only one box of books which we shipped home. Then we walked along the waterfront, stopped at a few stores, ate way more than we should have and had a wonderful time. We headed to the train station and rested a short time before it was time to board the train to return to Tacoma.

We had a wonderful time!

Sounds like a wonderful trip. Galen and I took the train down to Portland last year and really enjoyed it. It is nice to let someone else do the driving.
